Shortening Prayers After Travelling

الجواب حامداً ومصلياً

  As-salāmu ʿalaykum wa-raḥmatullāhi wa-barakātuh. How Many Rakʿāhs Does a Traveler Pray? A person will determine whether they should pray qaṣr (shorten prayers) or full ṣalāh based upon their condition – musāfir (traveler) or muqīm (resident) – at the time of actually praying.[1] For example, if a person is planning on going from Farmington Hills to Chicago and the time of Ẓuhr has already begun:

• If they pray before leaving Farmington Hills, they will pray four rakʿāhs.
• If they pray after having left Farmington Hills, they will pray two rakʿāhs.

Similarly, if during their return Ẓuhr has begun:

• If they pray before reaching Farmington Hills (even if the city is very close like Novi), they will pray two rakʿāhs.
• If they pray after reaching Farmington Hills, they will pray four rakʿāhs.

Your Question Because you decided to pray Ẓuhr after returning home, the full four rakʿāhs must be prayed. والله تعالى أعلم وعلمه أتم وبه التوفيق And Allāh Taʿālā Knows Best Muftī Mohammed Wahaajuddin bin Salauddin (May Allāh forgive him and his parents) --

قلت: أرئيت رجلاً خرج من مصره مسافراً بعد زوال الشمس أيصلي صلاة المسافر أم صلاة المقيم؟ قال: بل صلاة مسافر. قلت: ولم وقد خرج من مصره في وقت صلاة قد وجبت عليه؟ قال: أرأيت لو زالت الشمس وهو مسافر ثم قدم أهله أكان يصلي الظهر صلاة مسافر أو صلاة مقيم؟ قلت: بل صلاة مقيم. قال: فهذا وذاك سواء.

ثم يعتبر في السفر والإقامة، وكذا في الحيض والطهر منه، والبلوغ والإسلام، آخر الوقت، هو قدر التحيريمة،
