Assalamu Alaykum Wa Rahamatullahi Wa Barakaatuhu Muftī Saheb I hope you are well InShaaAllah. How can one become a Muftī? What books does a Muftī have to study and what training is necessary in order to become a strong Mufti? I am asking this question as there are many so-called Muftīs online which are causing Fitna. Jazakallahu Khayran

As-salāmu ʿalaykum wa-raḥmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

A person must first complete a rigorous six-to-eight-year alimmiyyah course in which they learn many subjects including:

  • Arabic Grammar (Syntax and Morphology)
  • Arabic Literature (Speech, Composition, and Rhetoric)
  • Logic (Mantiq)
  • Islamic Theology (‘Aqidah)
  • Principles of Islamic Jurisprudence (Usul al-Fiqh)
  • Fiqh (Jurisprudence)
  • ‘Ulum Al-Hadith (Sciences of Hadith Interpretation)
  • Hadith (Prophetic Traditions)
  • Usul al-Tafsir (Principles of Exegesis)
  • Tafsir al-Qur’an (Exegesis)
  • Sirah (Prophetic Biography)

Books studied can be found here, here, and here. After completing the alimiyyah course, an additional two or more years are dedicated to studying iftā.
